This "Critical Areas" dataset is a conglomeration of Whatcom County's GIS data related to wetlands. These data give a rough estimation of wetland locations in the county. Site evaluations for local projects are still necessary. There are various sources of information included in the dataset. The majority of the polygons come from the National Wetlands Inventory which was digitized off of 1981 1:58,000 scale aerial photos. The minimum size of wetland mapped depends on the vegetation cover. Minimum wetland size in forest ecosystems varies from 1 - 3 acres for the NWI wetlands. Other wetland polygons came from a 1992 Whatcom County Study to identify Category 1 wetlands, the Birch Bay MAWG project 2007, and a Ten Mile Creek wetlands study (Caplow and Fox, 1993). The remaining wetland polygons come from City of Bellingham, the City of Ferndale, forest weltands from the NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program land cover dataset (2004), and the 2003 Priority Habitats and Species dataset. Source information is maintained in the attributes. Confidence of of the presence of the wetland is based on source information.
Done for the 2004 Critical Areas Update. New to the dataset is the inclusion of Category 1 wetlands and the PHS wetland polygons. The wetlands will be buffered according to new buffers designated in CAO update. See buffer table for buffer sizes.
See section 16:16:600 of the Whatcom County Critical Areas Ordinance for more information. Included in the dataset is the NWI wetland type (see attribute section), and wetland category (only for NWI wetlands). The wetland categories follow the rating system developed by the Washington State Department of Ecology. The 15 Category 1 wetlands identified in this dataset were field verified. It is likely that some Category 1 wetlands were missed using these methods. Thes threshold criteria of a minimum of 10 acres and three wetland classes excluded those wetlands of smaller acreages and fewer wetland classes. Also the lowlands of the county were the focus of the study, excluding the areas zoned forestry and the National Forest lands. Only the Forested Weltand class from the NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program were used.
